Causes And Results Of Oxygen Deprivation
Hypoxia can be caused in several ways. In some cases, it is caused by a pinched umbilical cord or uterine rupture, resulting in an interrupted or obstructed blood supply to the baby. In other cases, hypoxia is caused by severe acidosis. This means that the fetus cannot get rid of all the carbon dioxide building up in its bloodstream and body tissues.
Birth hypoxia can result in cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that affects motor function. It can also result in seizures, fetal brain injury or death.
